A gas stove burner not lighting is usually a small problem at the burner itself: a cap that is not sitting flat, ports clogged with spilled food, or a burner that is still wet after cleaning. What you hear tells you where to look. Clicking with no flame points to the cap, the ports or the gas; no click at all points to power or the igniter; clicking that will not stop usually means moisture or a knob that is not fully off.
This guide is written for gas cooktops in San Jose and across Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties. If you smell gas, stop and read the safety steps further down first. If it is the oven rather than the cooktop, see our guide to an oven not heating.
- Clicks but no flame: check the cap sits flat and the burner ports are clear and dry.
- No click at all: check the breaker and any control lockout, then the igniter.
- Keeps clicking: make sure the knob is fully off, and let a wet burner dry for a few hours.
- Smell gas? Do not light anything or touch switches; leave the house, then call 911 and your gas utility.
Which symptom do you have?
Clicks, but no flame. The spark works, so the gas is not reaching it properly or is not catching. A cap out of place, clogged ports or a wet burner are the usual causes.
No click at all. The igniter is not sparking. If every burner is silent, start with power.
Keeps clicking. Clicking after the flame is lit, or with the knob turned off, usually comes from moisture or a knob that has not returned fully to Off.
How do you get a burner to light again?
1. Set the knob to Lite
Turn the knob to the Lite or Ignite position and listen. The igniter only sparks to light the gas when the knob is lined up with that position.
2. Seat the cap flat
With the burner cool, lift the grate and look at the cap. It should sit level and centered on the burner head, and each cap must go back on its own burner.
3. Clear the ports
Clean clogged burner holes with a straight pin, a needle or a paper clip. Do not enlarge or bend the holes, and do not use a wooden toothpick.
4. Wipe the electrode
Wipe the small igniter tip beside the burner with a clean, dry paper towel. Burned-on food or grease around it can stop the burner lighting.
5. Let it dry
After cleaning or a boil-over, give the burner a few hours to dry; a hair dryer on a cool setting can speed it up.
6. Check the power
No click on any burner? Check the breaker and that the range is plugged in. Some cooktops lock their controls after a power cut; on those, holding the lock key for 3 seconds unlocks them.
Why does one burner fail but not the others?
If one burner fails while the rest light normally, the problem is local to that burner: its cap, its ports, its electrode or the wire and switch behind it.
If no burner will light, look at what they share. No clicking anywhere points to power or the spark module. Clicking everywhere with no flame points to the gas: check the shutoff valve to the range is on. On a range being used for the first time, air may need to clear from the gas lines, and a range that was never connected needs a qualified gas technician.
In the Santa Cruz Mountains, many homes run on tank gas rather than a utility line: U.S. Census Bureau figures show about half of homes in Bonny Doon, and more than a fifth in Boulder Creek and Felton, are heated with bottled or tank gas. A range has to be adjusted for the gas it burns, natural or LP, and that adjustment is a job for a qualified technician or installer.
Why does a gas stove keep clicking?
Start with the knob: make sure it is turned all the way to Off and has popped back out. Moisture is next: water from cleaning or a spill can make the igniters click on their own until it dries.
Clicking while a burner is lit has other causes. A very large pan can starve the flame of air so it lifts and the igniter clicks, and a downdraft vent can push the flame away from the igniter. Try a lower setting or a smaller pan. Several burners clicking together when you light one is normal on many ranges.
If a cooktop keeps sparking when everything is off and dry, have the wiring checked by an electrician. A stuck switch or a failing spark module is a job for an appliance technician.
Can you light a gas burner during a power cut?
Power cuts are a real question in Santa Cruz County. In October 2019, planned shutoffs meant to keep utility equipment from starting wildfires left more than 8,100 county customers in the dark, including 3,050 around Scotts Valley and up Highway 17 and around 2,000 in Felton. In February 2024, three days after a major storm, more than 8,300 county residents were still without power, mostly around Ben Lomond and Boulder Creek.
On many gas cooktops you can still cook. Hold a lit match next to the burner, then turn the knob to low, and take care doing it. Make sure the burner stays lit or is turned off, because a burner that is blown out, or set to Lite without a flame, still lets gas flow. Check your own manual first.
The oven is different. A gas oven with a glow bar cannot be lit by hand, because gas only flows once the igniter is hot. If the oven is your problem, read why a gas or electric oven won't heat.
What about professional ranges?
We work on professional and built-in ranges as well as standard ones, and Viking and Thermador are among the brands customers have named in their reviews of our repairs.
Some of these cooktops use flame-sensing ignition: if the flame is pushed away from the igniter, it keeps sparking to re-light a burner that is already lit. Dry the burner, center the caps so they sit flat, and switch the breaker off for 30 seconds before calling for service.
When is it a job for a technician?
If you smell gas, do not try to light any appliance, do not touch electrical switches and do not use a phone inside the house. Leave first, then call 911 and your gas utility from outside or from a neighbor's phone.
Call a technician if the igniter sparks properly but the burner still will not light, if a burner never clicks after you have checked the power, or if the clicking carries on once everything is dry. These usually mean a worn igniter, switch or spark module, or a problem with the gas supply, and the work sits close to the gas valve.
Age plays a part here. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, about 58 percent of homes in Santa Clara County and 61 percent in Santa Cruz County were built before 1980, so the outlet and gas shutoff behind a range are often much older than the range itself. We repair gas ranges and cooktops at your home: diagnosis and repair are carried out on site.
Common questions
How do I know if my gas stove igniter is bad?
If one burner gives no spark while the others click, and its cap is seated flat and the burner is clean and dry, that burner's igniter, wire or switch is the likely fault. If it still will not spark, it needs a technician.
Why is my gas stove clicking but no gas is coming out?
If no burner gets gas, check that the shutoff valve to the range is on. If only one burner clicks without lighting, its ports may be blocked: clean them with a straight pin. Never force or adjust gas parts.
Why won't my burner work after cleaning?
Usually it is still wet or was put back wrong. Let it dry for a few hours, then check that each cap is on its own burner and sits flat.
My gas stove won't light and I smell gas. What should I do?
Stop trying to light it. Do not touch electrical switches or use a phone in the house. Leave, then call 911 and your gas utility from outside or from a neighbor's phone.
Is a clicking gas stove dangerous?
The clicking is a spark, not a leak. The risk is gas flowing with no flame: a burner set to Lite but not lit still has gas flowing to it. If a burner has not lit after 10 seconds, turn it off and wait a minute before trying again.
