Common faults

Fridge problems we repair, and what usually causes them

Most refrigerator faults come down to a handful of parts: fans, the defrost system, temperature controls, the water supply and the sealed cooling system. Here is what each symptom usually means. The diagnosis at your home tells which part has actually failed.

  • Refrigerator not cooling, freezer still cold

This usually points to airflow rather than the compressor. In most frost-free refrigerators the cold air is made in the freezer and blown into the fresh-food side by the evaporator fan. A stopped fan, a coil buried in frost because the defrost system failed, or a stuck air damper leaves the fridge warm while the freezer stays cold.

One customer's fridge had a failed fan and a cracked wire connector that kept it from running.

  • Fridge and freezer both warm

When both sections warm up, the cooling system itself is not running properly. Common causes are dirty condenser coils or a failed condenser fan, a start relay that no longer starts the compressor, a control board fault, and less often the compressor itself or a refrigerant leak.

Our customers' repairs include a failed start device, compressors replaced with the system recharged, and a valve and filter replaced with a recharge.

  • Freezer not freezing, or frost building up

Heavy frost on the back wall of the freezer usually means the automatic defrost is not working: the defrost heater, its thermostat or sensor, or the control that times it. A worn door gasket lets humid air in and builds frost as well. Left alone, the frost blocks airflow and the freezer warms up.

  • Water leaking inside or under the fridge

Water inside the refrigerator is most often a blocked or frozen defrost drain: melt water backs up and spills under the crisper drawers or freezes on the floor of the freezer. Water under the fridge more often comes from the water supply line, the inlet valve or the drain pan.

  • Ice maker or water dispenser not working

An ice maker that stops making ice usually has a water problem first: a clogged filter, a failed water inlet valve, a frozen fill tube or low water pressure. If water reaches it, the ice maker unit itself may have failed. A dispenser that will not pour usually has the same water-side causes.

One customer's Whirlpool ice maker was making ice again after a single visit.

  • Clicking, buzzing or rattling

A click every few minutes while the fridge stays warm is typical of a start relay or overload that cannot start the compressor. Buzzing or scraping often comes from a fan blade catching on ice or a worn fan motor. A new noise is worth checking early, before food is at risk.

  • Running constantly, or freezing food in the fridge

A refrigerator that never seems to stop is often fighting dirty condenser coils or a leaking door gasket. Food freezing in the fresh-food section usually means a temperature sensor, the control board or an air damper stuck open.

  • Door, gasket, alarm and moisture problems

A torn or flattened gasket, a sagging door or a faulty door switch lets warm air in, causes condensation, and can keep the door alarm beeping. Moisture inside is not always a fault: one Sub-Zero owner's problem came down to the settings, and no parts were needed. Another customer's GE door alarm, which had kept them up for several nights, was fixed.

  • Error code or a dead control panel

An error code is the refrigerator's own report of a sensor, fan or control fault. Write the code down and find the model number before you call: both help narrow the fault and the part before the visit.

How it works

How a repair visit works

One call, one technician, and often the fridge is cold again on the first visit. Customers mention a quick answer to the call, a clear explanation of the fault, and the part already on hand.

  1. Call +1 (669) 301-0797 or book a call-back. Same-day service is available, and you are told honestly when we can be there.
  2. Have the model number ready, plus what the fridge is doing and when it started.
  3. The refrigerator is diagnosed in your kitchen, and the fault is explained to you.
  4. You get a quote and decide whether to go ahead before any repair starts.
  5. Original spare parts are fitted, often on the same visit.
  6. Every repair carries a 3-month warranty on labor and replacement parts.

Any refrigerator

Built-in, French-door and side-by-side refrigerators

We repair freestanding and built-in refrigerators on site, so a built-in never has to be pulled out of the cabinetry. Recent fridge jobs include a built-in side-by-side beside Miele wall ovens, a stainless side-by-side with a water and ice dispenser, and a French-door refrigerator in a family kitchen.

We service all major brands, built-in and professional models included. Customers have named Sub-Zero, GE and Whirlpool refrigerators in their reviews.

Older refrigerators are worth a look too: customers have had fridges over 10 years old repaired, one of them 13, as well as a garage fridge/freezer.

Honest advice

Repair or replace?

You get the quote before any work, and you will be told plainly when a repair is not worth it. Customers mention exactly that, and being told when nothing was broken at all. When a repair does make sense, it is usually the fastest way back to a cold fridge: several customers had theirs running again the same day or the next.

  • Usually worth repairing

    • The refrigerator is otherwise in good shape
    • The fault is a part such as a fan, a defrost component, a start relay, a sensor, a valve or the ice maker
    • It is a built-in model, where replacing it also means cabinet work
  • Usually time to replace

    • The repair would cost more than half the price of a comparable new refrigerator, a common rule of thumb
    • The diagnosis shows the repair is not worth it. You will be told so plainly

Quick checks

Before you call: quick checks

A few checks take two minutes and sometimes solve the problem. If they do not, they help the diagnosis.

  • Check that the refrigerator is plugged in and the circuit breaker has not tripped.
  • Check the temperature setting. The FDA recommends 40°F or below for the fridge and 0°F for the freezer.
  • Make sure food is not blocking the air vents inside the fridge or freezer.
  • Close the doors firmly and look for a torn or loose door gasket.
  • Give the condenser coils room to breathe: clear the space at the back or the grille at the bottom of dust.

My 13-year-old refrigerator quit cooling on the weekend (of course!) On Monday, I called a recommended appliance repair shop, but could not get an appointment before Friday. They gave me a list of 5 other shops to call, but only one returned my call and -- Friday again. Then I saw Marian Appliance Repair, with highratings, but only a small review sample. I called and immediately Marian answered, and set up an appointment for the very next day! That was only the first of my good news, because he showed up on time, found the problem quickly, quoted me a very fair price, said he had the parts, and asked if I wanted to repair it. About an hour or so later, my fridge was up and running and COOLING! I am so pleased with the service, plus Marian was able to explain everything he was doing, and was very pleasant to talk with. After he was done, he explained why my refrigerator was worth keeping and other useful facts. He also guaranteed his work for 3 months. I would definitely call Marian again, and I hope he gets a lot of business, because he was top-notch, easy to get in touch with, had the parts (smart!!), arrived on time and worked quickly and thoroughly.

I needed 3 appliances repaired, 2 refrigerators and a gas oven. Marian showed up on time. He knew just what to do to fix everything. The oven was over 40 years old but he knew how to diagnose and replace the igniter. The refrigerators were over 10 years old. He knew exactly what the problems were and how to fix them. I was very impressed. The cost was very reasonable. I will definitely recommend him to anyone that needs repairs.

Contacted Marian to figure out why our Sub Zero refrigerator appears to have excessive moisture. He was prompt with responding to our request for service, scheduling appointment was efficient. He arrived on time as scheduled, respectful, professional, and easy to communicate with. He explained everything to us. He determined there was nothing wrong with our refrigerator except for the settings causing the moisture. Knowing he did not upsell me by saying parts need to be replaced it showed he is honest, this is rarely the case from my experience from other appliance repair businesses. Currently, his recommendations worked and our refrigerator is working fine. I will definitely hire Marian again. I hope his business will continue to be successful as his honesty will go a long way.

Marian was quick to respond to me once I reached out and was able to fix the issue with my refrigerator the next day. He had the compressor on-hand for my fridge, so there wasn't any downtime and he was able to fix it on the spot.

Marian is a fully licensed appliance repairman who services all appliances. He is very professional and has a warm, engaging personality. Immediately, we saw that he was highly trained and had commercial-quality tools to do the job. This was a refrigerator repair. Prior, we had watched YouTube videos on the issue, purchased a tool, and cleaned out the lines, but this did not fix the issue. We appreciated that Marion listened to us and did not charge us to redo what we had already done. He asked us a few informative questions to ensure he knew what we had already covered. Like the others, we had same-day service. Another attribute that stood out that others have shared is that Marion has a spring in his step and works in a very organized, efficient manner, He doesn't waste time. In the past, we've had issues with repair people dragging the time out. It was refreshing to see a repair person work quickly AND competently. As others have shared, Marion cleans up everything. He left our freezer and inside of the fridge clean and wiped down. He had to take the wall down in the freezer. He made the repair and steam-cleaned everything! Honestly, it looks like new in the freezer and fridge. Pricing was much less than what we normally pay, and he was exceptionally reasonable. We are of retirement age, and no one has ever worked and cleaned up like him. This is our first post for an appliance repair person ever. We recommend Marian without reservation and have already messaged friends and family with a picture of his business card.

Wow. Showed up on time, responding on a HOLIDAY (MLK) after answering the phone on the day before, a Sunday. Efficient. Professional. Left everything neat and clean. Fair price. Replaced the compressor on our fridge/freezer and recharged the system. Then proceeded to instruct on how long to wait before we could safely re-load our food from our garage fridge. He even gave a written 6 month warranty on his work. Very highly recommend.

FAQ

Refrigerator repair: common questions

  • Can you repair my refrigerator today?

Often, yes. Same-day service is available. Call +1 (669) 301-0797 and we will tell you honestly when we can be there, rather than booking a slot we cannot keep. Keep the doors closed in the meantime to hold the cold in.

  • Can a refrigerator be fixed if it runs warm?

Usually, yes. A warm refrigerator is most often a fan, the defrost system, a start relay or a control fault, all of which can be repaired. In our customers' fridges the cause has also been a compressor, a valve and filter, or a damaged wire connector.

  • Is my refrigerator worth repairing?

Usually, if it is in good shape otherwise and the repair costs well under a comparable new fridge. A common rule of thumb is to replace when the repair would cost more than half the price of a new one. You get a quote before any work starts.

  • Do you repair freezers and ice makers?

Yes. Freezers that stop freezing or build up frost, and ice makers that stop making ice are part of refrigerator repair, and they are handled on the same visit.

  • How long will food stay safe while my fridge is broken?

About 4 hours in a closed refrigerator, according to the USDA. A full freezer holds for about 48 hours and a half-full one for about 24. Keep the doors shut, and throw away perishables that have been above 40°F for more than 2 hours.

  • Do you work on built-in and high-end refrigerators?

Yes. We service all major brands, including built-in and professional models. Customers have named Sub-Zero, GE and Whirlpool refrigerators in their reviews, and built-ins are repaired in place.

  • Is the repair covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every repair carries a 3-month warranty on both labor and any replacement parts fitted.
