Common faults

Washer problems we fix, and what usually causes them

Most washer faults come down to a few parts: the drain pump, the door or lid lock, the water inlet, the drive system and the control board. Here is what each symptom usually means; the diagnosis at your home tells which part failed.

  • Washer won't drain, or stops full of water

Usually a sock, coin or hair clip caught in the drain pump or its filter, or a kinked drain hose; after that, a failed pump. A blocked house drain looks the same, so it is checked too.

One customer's pump had a foreign object lodged inside: it was cleared, not replaced. Another needed a new pump.

  • Washer won't spin, clothes come out soaking wet

A washer will not spin until it has drained, so a drain fault often shows up as no spin. An unbalanced load, the lid switch or door lock, a worn belt on belt-drive models or a motor fault are the other usual causes.

  • Water leaking under the washer

Usually the fill hoses or taps, the drain hose connection, or a loose drain filter cap on a front-loader. A torn door seal or too much detergent leak too.

  • Door won't lock or won't open

A front-load door must lock before the cycle starts, and stays locked while there is water in the drum, so a door that will not open after a cycle is often a drain fault. A failed lock, a bent latch or clothing caught in the seal stops the start. One customer's washer needed the rubber door ring and the door lock repaired.

  • Washer won't start, or the controls do nothing

After the outlet and breaker, it is usually the door or lid lock, the control board or a selector part. Customers' repairs include a GE washer's control board, and a Samsung whose controls stopped responding: it needed a new control/inverter board, then a second part before the drum turned again.

  • Shaking, banging or a loud spin

Usually an unbalanced or overloaded drum. If it shakes with a normal load, the feet may need leveling or the shock absorbers, suspension or drum bearings are worn.

  • Slow to fill, or not filling at all

Half-closed taps, a kinked fill hose, inlet screens clogged with minerals or a failed water inlet valve.

  • Musty smell or mold in the door seal

Front-loaders trap water and lint in the fold of the door seal. Manufacturers recommend HE detergent, a monthly tub-clean cycle and leaving the door open between loads. A torn seal can be replaced.

Error codes

Common washer error codes and what they mean

These are the manufacturers' meanings for most of their US models. Codes vary by model, so check your manual too.

  • LG front-load

    • OE: cannot drain. Check the drain hose for kinks and clean the drain pump filter.
    • UE: load unbalanced. Redistribute the laundry.
    • IE: not filling. Check the taps and fill hoses.
    • dE, dE1, dE2: door not closed, or closed but not locked.
    • LE: drum fails to spin. Unplug for 5 minutes and reduce the load.
  • Samsung

    • 5E, SE, 5C, SC or nd: not draining.
    • 4E, 4C or nF: not filling.
    • dE or dC: door not detected as closed and locked.
    • Ub or UE: load unbalanced.
    • AC or AC6: communication error. Switch the power off for 2 to 3 minutes; if it returns, it needs service.
  • Whirlpool and Maytag

    • F9 E1: draining takes longer than about 8 minutes.
    • F5 E2: front-load door will not lock.
    • F8 E1 or LO FL: low water flow.
    • dL (Maytag) or LdL (Whirlpool): top-load lid will not lock.
  • GE top-load

    • UE: load unbalanced.
    • IE or H2O SUPPLY: no water coming in.
    • FE: critical water level. GE says to turn off the water and power and call for service.

Any washer

Front-load, top-load and stacked washers

Each type fails in its own way. Front-loaders mostly need door locks, door seals and drain pump filters; top-loaders lid switches and lid locks; stacked units are repaired where they stand in the laundry closet. Customers have named GE, Samsung and Whirlpool washers.

How it works

How a washer repair visit works

One technician from call to repair. In reviews, some washers ran again within the hour; others needed a part ordered and fitted a few days later.

  1. Call +1 (669) 301-0797 or book a call-back. Same-day service is available, and you are told honestly when we can be there.
  2. Have the brand, the model number and any error code ready, plus what the washer is doing.
  3. The washer is diagnosed at your home, and the fault is explained to you.
  4. You get a quote and decide whether to go ahead before any repair starts.
  5. Original spare parts are fitted, often on the same visit. If a part has to be ordered, we come back to fit it.
  6. Every repair carries a 3-month warranty on labor and replacement parts.

Honest advice

Repair or replace your washer?

The US Department of Energy puts the average life of a home washer at about 13 years, so a younger machine is usually worth a quote.

  • Usually worth repairing

    • The washer is well under its expected life and otherwise in good shape
    • The fault is a part such as a drain pump, door lock, hose, inlet valve, belt or control board
    • It is a stacked or built-in unit that is awkward to replace
  • Usually time to replace

    • The repair would cost more than half the price of a comparable new washer: the common 50/50 rule
    • The drum bearings or tub have failed on an older machine. You will be told so plainly

Local water

Hard water and washers in San Jose and Santa Cruz

San Jose Water's 2025 report gives average hardness from 99 to 288 ppm depending on the source; most City of Santa Cruz water averaged 160 mg/L. Minerals can clog a washer's inlet screens and slow filling, and GE notes that hard water needs more detergent.

Quick checks

Before you call: quick checks

A few minutes of checks sometimes solve it.

  • Make sure both water taps behind the washer are fully open and the fill hoses are not kinked.
  • Look for a kink in the drain hose. Put the hose end in a bucket and run a spin: if it empties into the bucket but not the standpipe, the house drain is blocked.
  • If your front-loader has a drain pump filter behind a lower panel, let hot water cool, lay down towels and a shallow tray, then clean it.
  • Redistribute a one-sided load and run the cycle again.
  • Replace fill hoses older than 5 years, as GE and Whirlpool recommend.

Had several other techs try to fix washing machine and failed 4 times. Marian took only one visit and it's finally fixed. Highly recommend

Marian is very professional, prompt, explained the problem when he came for a diagnosis of my washing machine. Extremely fair prices and I will use him again for any appliance problems.

They did a great job flexible and courteous and was able to fix the washer issues with the rubber ring and door locking mechanism. Reasonable value as well.

Great service got right to work and located the problem and fixed my washer right away. It's working great. Highly recommend.

Marian was quick to respond to my inquiry of help for my GE Washing Machine. He stopped by on the same day (Sunday!), diagnosed the issue within ten minutes (motherboard) and was able to order the part and replaced it within four days (there was a holiday so it took a bit longer for part to be shipped). It has been working well ever since!

Marian responded immediately, on a Sunday when I queried about my washer repair. I was able to set an appointment for the next day, which was President's day. He was prompt, responsive and efficient. He didn't have the hose that he needed for the repair and was able to make a short trip to buy it from the local hardware store. He was very professional and got my washer fixed promptly. Thank you!

My washing machine needed a new pump and Marian came out to fix it within a day for a reasonable price. Very nice guy too. Will definitely keep him in mind for future repairs.

Really briefly: He came, he saw, he fixed, he charged less than I thought he would. Longer version: The washing machine wouldn't drain. The technician showed up literally 30 minutes after I called in. (I guess he was in the neighborhood) Clearly competent, felt like before this he was an airplane mechanic... Instead of quickly telling me to replace the pump, he took a couple of minutes to take the pump apart, found a foreign object lodged inside, put it back together, was done in under an hour. If I had continued to try it myself, it would have taken me a couple of days, I probably would have broken something along the way, and I'd have replaced the entire pump. So, win-win-win.

I had a GE washing machine with a start knob that wouldn't turn to set the mode. I shared several videos while attempting to troubleshoot the issue myself. Marian was patient and identified a missing part. He also informed me where I could purchase the replacement part at a lower cost. Throughout the process, Marian didn't pressure me to schedule a service visit or make a payment.

Dimitro is a wizard! He came over on short notice on Super Bowl Sunday and fixed our washer in about a1.5 hrs. We are super grateful!

I have a Samsung washer that suddenly stopped working, showing up the AC6 error. It seems the inverter was burnt. While the washer turns on, none of the controls were responsive. Marian responded to my request on Yelp in a few minutes of sending my request. Stated the cost of the part (control/inverter) and labor. Ordered the part right off after agreeing to go with him. Visited after 6 days with the part, however, after replacing the part that was slightly burnt, there was still another part causing the issue that's causing the drum to not rotate. Ordered another part immediately and visited in 2 days to fix it. The washer started working normally again. Sent me an invoice on the spot and I made payment through Zelle. Overall, prompt response, great with communicating and great expertise. I really appreciate that he wore shoe covers while he was in the house even without me making any mention of it. Would definitely recommend to others.

Marian responded to my request within the hour (on a Sunday) and came the next day and fixed our washing machine that shut down because it was not able to drain. He arrived, checked our machine and luckily had the part on him. He fixed our machine in an hour and it is now working wonderfully. Overall, his promptness, quality and customer service was amazing. He was even respectful and put booties on to walk through our house. I would not hesitate to recommend to friends or family and call again for an appliance fix. Thank you Marian!

He came out same day and got my washer working again. A huge relief for a family of five trying to get the weekend laundry done.
Heather H.Aug 3, 2024
Marian responded quickly with same day service and immediately found the issue with my toploader whirlpool washer. He did not overcharge me for being a weekend call with same day service. Most definitely would recommend and continue using for my appliances. In general.
Anna M.Mar 10, 2024
Great response time and excellent customer service. My washing machine stopped while a load of laundry was still in the washer and full of water. Marian knew what he was doing and was able to fix the problem within 30 - 45 minutes. Highly recommended and will call him next time I have any issues.
